The cheapest way to send money from the USA to India

Bank wire, online transfer specialists, and app-based services all price differently. Here is how to compare them on one common measure: total cost.

Start with total cost, not the headline fee

Total cost equals the upfront fee plus the exchange-rate margin. To find the margin, compare the provider's rate with the live mid-market rate at the same moment and express the difference as a percentage.

A service charging four dollars with a 0.4 percent margin beats a free service with a 2 percent margin on any amount above a few hundred dollars.

The main channels

Traditional bank wires are reliable and well suited to very large amounts, but they usually carry the widest exchange-rate margin and can involve correspondent bank charges deducted en route.

Online transfer specialists typically publish a transparent margin and lower fees, with delivery to an Indian bank account in one to two business days. Card-funded transfers are faster but often carry a cash-advance fee from the card issuer.

Rules and paperwork worth knowing

Money received into an NRE account is freely repatriable; funds in an NRO account face repatriation limits and tax treatment specific to Indian-sourced income. Choosing the right destination account matters more than saving a few basis points on the rate.

Large transfers may prompt source-of-funds documentation on either side. Having recent payslips, a sale deed or a tax return ready avoids delays.

A simple routine

Check the live mid-market rate here, get quotes from two providers for the exact amount, compute total cost for each, and pick the cheaper one. Repeat every few months — provider pricing changes more often than people expect.
