The Social Security Calculator estimates your monthly retirement benefit from your average indexed monthly earnings (AIME) and the age at which you claim benefits.
Benefits are calculated on your top 35 years of earnings, then adjusted for early or delayed claiming. Claiming before full retirement age reduces benefits; delaying past FRA increases them by 8% per year until age 70.
PIA = 90% × first bend point + 32% × middle + 15% × top
Adjusted for age at claimA $2,500/mo FRA benefit becomes about $1,750 if claimed at 62 or $3,100 if delayed to age 70.
For anyone born 1960 or later, FRA is 67. For 1943–1954 it's 66; between those it phases in by month.
Early claiming provides income sooner but permanently lower monthly checks. Delaying is a strong choice if you have savings to bridge the gap and expect a long life.
Up to 85% of benefits can be taxable if combined income exceeds certain thresholds. Federal rules apply; some states also tax benefits.
