About the Tip Calculator

The Tip Calculator computes gratuity on a restaurant bill at your chosen tip percentage and splits the total across a group.

Calculation method

Tip = Bill × Tip percentage. Total = Bill + Tip. Per person = Total ÷ Number of guests.

Tip = Bill × Rate%

How to use this calculator

  1. Enter the bill amount.
  2. Enter the tip percentage (typically 15–20% in the US).
  3. Enter the number of people splitting the check.

Example

A $85 bill with 18% tip is $15.30 in tip and $100.30 total. Split 4 ways, that's $25.08 each.

Frequently asked questions

How much should I tip?

US convention: 15% acceptable, 18–20% good service, 22%+ exceptional. Delivery and hair services usually 15–20%; coffee tip jars are optional.

Tip on pre-tax or post-tax?

Traditionally pre-tax, though many bill presenters suggest post-tax tips. Either is acceptable — the difference is small.

Are tips shared?

Often. Servers commonly tip out bussers, bartenders, and food runners a percentage of sales or tips received.
